The American Flag
Ain’t Trump’s or MAGAs’ Flag — It is Ours!
This coming Saturday June 14th, 2025 will be the 248th anniversary of the adoption of the American flag design by a resolution passed by the 2nd Continental Congress on June 14th, 1777. This resolution stated, “. . . the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
During Trump’s first Presidency, I watched his hideous flag-waving rallies, and the Democrats’ subsequent, feckless attempts to remove him from office. I came to view the American Flag as a symbol of humiliation and embarrassment, nationally and globally. These feelings of humiliation and embarrassment have increased as Trump’s second term has begun.
This Saturday, June 14th, 2025 I will attend the nation-wide “No Kings” protest. I had planned to not fly the American flag at the protest.
I have changed my mind. Here is why.
Our Flag doesn’t represent the partisan beliefs of Republicans, Democrats, lobbyists, or donors. Our Flag represents a set of ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and Our Constitution.
When the Founders drafted these documents, they knew they, and the people they each represented, did not yet live up to those ideals. At no time during the 249 years since declaring Our independence have the American people ever lived up to Our founding principles and ideals.
Our flag is a symbol of Our ongoing quest to realize the Founders’ aspirations for the American People.
For these reasons, I will proudly fly the American Flag this Flag Day at the nation-wide “No Kings” protest; not for pride in what America is, but for what it could and should be.
